Same factories, same Italian leather, a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand. a16z Speedrun and Lightspeed's Jeremy Liew are backing it.

Atoire Raises $9.5m to Sell Luxury Goods Without the Luxury Markup

Atoire has raised a $9.5m seed round from investors including a16z Speedrun, Night Capital and Lightspeed Ventures' Jeremy Liew.

The pitch: handbags and clothing made from the same materials, in the same factories, as high-end brands — with an Italian leather handbag costing a few hundred dollars rather than the thousands Prada or Louis Vuitton would charge.

Not a dupe, says the founder

The company arrives as dupe culture has gone mainstream and the luxury sector has faced consumer backlash over steep post-pandemic price rises. Younger buyers in particular have sought near-identical replications of high-end goods, and doing so has become something close to a status signal in itself.

Co-founder Redouane Ramdani rejects that framing for what Atoire sells. "It's the same material, same craftsmanship," he said. "It's coming from the same factories." Nor does he accept the fast fashion label: "It's slow," he clarified.

What is actually being tested

The distinction he is drawing is real and it is also the whole risk. A dupe copies a design; Atoire claims to sell the same object without the name.

If that is accurate, the business is arbitraging the gap between manufacturing cost and brand premium — which is enormous, and which luxury houses have spent decades constructing deliberately.

The question the round is funding is whether customers who can no longer justify the premium want the object, or wanted the premium. Luxury's own answer has always been that the two are inseparable, and that the price is not a markup on the handbag but the product itself.
