July's PCE inflation reading held at 3.7% headline and 3.3% core, both still above the Federal Reserve's target. Futures markets responded by lifting the odds of a September rate hike to roughly 44%, up from 36% before the report. Bitcoin touched an intraday high of $79,251.60 the same day.

"In-line is not the same as harmless," one analyst noted. "A core print at consensus leaves the existing policy debate largely intact and settles little."

Where the direction is coming from instead

With rate expectations offering nothing new, the drivers are ETF flows, spot liquidity and derivatives positioning.

Glassnode said US spot bitcoin ETFs absorbed $2.23bn around the initial squeeze, with no single day of net outflows and the strongest seven-day intake of 2026. Farside Investors recorded a further $314.3m on 25 August alone, led by $284.4m into BlackRock's IBIT, extending a positive run from 17 to 25 August to roughly $2.6bn.

Every wallet-size cohort was accumulating simultaneously, from the smallest holders to the largest addresses.

Why cash-driven moves behave differently

The composition matters more than the total. A rally built on leverage carries its own reversal inside it — liquidation cascades that accelerate the drop when the move stalls.

A rally funded by spot ETF creations does not. That capital is unlevered, and the buying happened while speculative positioning was being flushed out rather than built up.

It makes the move slower and more durable. It also removes the mechanism that produces the violent upside squeezes traders have come to expect.
