Bitcoin Is Outrunning the Market It's Supposed to Lead
BTC is up 24% in a week while the ex-BTC, ex-ETH market shrank — and Bitcoin dominance near 61% says the money is staying at the top.

By the usual script, altcoins are the high-beta side of crypto — they fall harder and bounce higher. This rally is not following the script. Bitcoin is up roughly 24% over the past week, its best run since 2023, while the rest of the market has struggled to keep pace.
Ethereum has held its end up, climbing about 30% to above $2,500. It is everything below the top two that is lagging: Total3, the index that strips out both BTC and ETH, actually fell on the week to around $753 billion even as Bitcoin pressed toward $80,000.
Dominance tells the story
Total2 — the full altcoin market — jumped more than 24% between August 19 and 22 as the rally initially spread, pushing back above $1 trillion. Then it stalled and gave ground while Bitcoin kept climbing. The clearest summary is Bitcoin dominance: BTC's share of total crypto market value climbed to about 61% this week, near its high for the year, before easing to 59%.
CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season Index, which counts how many of the top 100 coins have beaten Bitcoin over 90 days, confirms the imbalance — nowhere near the 75 threshold that historically marks an alt season.
Why the top is eating the rally
The explanation is probably as simple as the buyers. This leg has been driven by ETF inflows, treasury-company purchases, and macro money reacting to the Treasury's buyback expansion — channels that buy Bitcoin (and increasingly ETH) but have no way to touch the long tail. The marginal buyer of 2026 has a brokerage account, not an exchange account.
History says dominance peaks eventually roll over as confidence spreads down the risk curve, and 2021-style alt seasons have started from setups like this one. But history also says that transition needs retail participation, and the sentiment data suggests retail is only now waking up. Until it does, this is a Bitcoin rally that the rest of the market is merely watching.
