California Is Preparing for the President to Call Its Election a Fraud

In May, as the midterm season began, President Donald Trump returned to a familiar target.

"California is very fraud [sic]. The whole thing is a fraud. The whole deal: Their elections are a fraud. Their mail-in votes are a fraud," he told Fox News host Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law. "You know, they don't have voting booths. Everything's by mail."

None of those assertions is accurate. California operates in-person voting alongside its mail ballots, with signature verification, ballot tracking and post-election audits.

The strategy officials have chosen

With November approaching and Democrats expected to win in the state, election officials say they are ready for the scrutiny — and their answer is not rebuttal but exposure.

"At the end of the day, part of our job is to be transparent and instil confidence within the public about our processes," one official said. The approach relies on public outreach: opening the counting process to observers, explaining the chain of custody, showing people the machinery rather than arguing about it.

Why the choice is interesting

Direct rebuttal has a poor record against claims like these. Repeating a false statement in order to deny it tends to spread it, and the audience most inclined to believe it is the least inclined to accept the denial's source.

Demonstration works differently. It does not persuade committed believers either, but it produces a documented record of how the count was conducted — which is what actually matters when the results are contested afterwards, in court or in public.
