Israeli Strikes on South Lebanon Kill Woman Married 48 Hours Earlier

A Lebanese woman has been killed and several people injured in Israeli strikes on the town of Arab Salim, in southern Lebanon's Nabatieh district.

Lebanon's health ministry said six people were wounded, including a child, a woman and two elderly people. The state-run National News Agency reported that the woman who died "had been married for 48 hours." Her house was destroyed in the attack.

Lebanese security sources said at least ten Israeli strikes hit the wider Nabatieh area, with artillery shelling also reported on the outskirts of Rashaf in the Bint Jbeil district.

The competing accounts

The Israeli military said it was targeting Hezbollah after the group struck its soldiers in the south overnight, and that it hit Hezbollah "weapon storage facilities."

"Israel targeted the town of Arab Salim in the Nabatieh governorate. It targeted a residential area," said Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from Beirut. "The Israeli army says it is hitting infrastructure, and that this is in retaliation for Hezbollah launching armed drones at its" positions.

The pattern

The two descriptions are not necessarily in conflict, and that is what makes this exchange so difficult to break. Hezbollah stores weapons in populated areas; Israel strikes those locations; civilians are killed; each strike supplies the justification for the next.

The cycle has continued at low intensity for months, well below the threshold that would attract sustained international attention, and each individual round is small enough to be absorbed without either side treating it as a decision point.
