Is Jackson Hole a Crypto Conference Now?

An actual crypto conference took place in Jackson Hole between 17 and 20 August, where roughly 500 guests gathered at the Four Seasons for the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium to hear executives, investors and lawmakers discuss digital assets.

Today, around 120 central bankers, economists and officials meet 35 miles north at Jackson Lake Lodge for the Kansas City Fed's annual economic symposium. The theme: "Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy."

Two rooms, one subject

SALT and Kraken filled a ballroom with token businesses. The Federal Reserve has made payment technology the organising idea of its most closely watched policy retreat.

One gathering belongs to the industry. The other belongs to the officials who set rates, supervise banks and manage public money. The distance between them now feels remarkably short.

What the programme confirms

The Kansas City Fed's 25 August announcement made the overlap explicit, listing crypto and stablecoins alongside instant payments and other digital payment systems, and saying the discussion would extend to the future of currency and banking.

That is a change in status rather than a change in position. Jackson Hole is where the Fed signals what it considers structurally important enough to devote a year's headline session to, and inclusion on the programme is not endorsement.

But it does settle one long-running argument. Stablecoins are no longer being discussed at the Fed as a question of whether they matter to the payment system. They are on the agenda as part of it.
