SpaceX Will Spend $100bn on a Louisiana Launch Site
A 125,000-acre facility built to support thousands of Starship flights a year — from a newly listed company whose shares are down 30% from their peak.

SpaceX has announced it will build its largest launch site yet in Louisiana, a $100bn project named Starbase, Louisiana, with construction due to start next year.
The 125,000-acre site expands the company's operations well beyond its Texas headquarters and Florida locations. SpaceX says it will "support thousands of Starship flights a year with missions launching to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond," with a first Starship launch from the new base targeted for 2029.
What it means locally
The facility will add more than 3,000 direct jobs. Louisiana Economic Development says the average wage at the base — the largest of its kind in the world — would be 192% above the region's current average salary, and estimates more than 8,100 additional jobs created indirectly.
"The historic project will establish Louisiana as a global hub for next-generation aerospace, with the capacity and infrastructure needed to dramatically increase launch frequency and expand access to space," the agency said.

The Louisiana facility shares its name with the SpaceX site on the southern tip of Texas. In 2025, residents of an area of Cameron County where the company runs testing and development operations voted to incorporate the land as a city called Starbase.
That is worth holding in mind when reading the Louisiana jobs figures. A company town built around a single employer delivers real wages and real infrastructure, and it also concentrates a region's economic fortunes in one corporate decision.
The investor question
The announcement arrives at an awkward moment. SpaceX shares began trading on Nasdaq in June in the largest stock market debut ever, and the newly listed company is under pressure to convince investors it can be profitable while pursuing an expansion of this scale.
The shares have fallen more than 30% from the highs reached shortly after listing, though they remain above the $135 offer price.
A $100bn commitment is a striking response to that pressure. It is roughly the scale of national infrastructure programmes, funded by a company that has been public for two months and is being asked when it will make money.
The rest of the build-out
Louisiana is one item on a longer list. Elon Musk has set out plans for SpaceX to reach Mars, develop AI models and launch data centres into orbit. In August, SpaceX and Tesla announced a $16.8bn AI chipmaking complex in Texas called the Terafab, intended to meet their growing demand for computing power across AI and robotics.
Taken together, these commitments describe a company building capacity far ahead of demonstrated demand — the same wager Musk has made repeatedly, and the reason the equity is volatile.
The case for it rests on a single number: thousands of Starship flights a year would be an order-of-magnitude change in launch capacity, and would make the economics of everything above it look different. The case against is that nobody has yet shown there is a market for thousands of launches a year, and Louisiana is being built on the assumption that there will be.
