Bitcoin's Bottom Signal Is Flashing. The Data Says Don't Rush.
VanEck's capitulation dashboard lit up — and its own history shows those clusters underperformed over the following three and six months.

Bitcoin's late-August recovery arrived in stages. In the days before the 19 August move, VanEck's capitulation dashboard showed broad market stress with eight of its twelve signals active, and the first leg higher was consistent with a sharp reset in bearish positioning. The case for something more durable strengthened afterwards as ETF creations and wallet accumulation broadened the demand base.
Capitulation is not timing
VanEck's own historical data separates the two, and the separation is unflattering. Comparable signal clusters trailed bitcoin's all-days baseline over the following 90 and 180 days — even though their one-year returns were stronger.
In other words: the signal has identified genuine capitulation, and buying it has historically meant underperforming for two quarters before the payoff arrives.
What the shorthand leaves out
A widely shared post on 26 August offered the bullish version: "12 out of 12."
The underlying report is more careful. Eight signals were active on 12 August; all twelve had entered extreme territory at some point during the preceding three months — which is not the same claim.
Even the count of eight depends on a special rule: eleven of the indicators use historical percentile extremes, and one does not.
The general lesson
Dashboards like this compress a great deal of judgement into a number, and the number then circulates without the rules that produced it. The gap between "twelve signals reached extremes over three months" and "twelve out of twelve" is where most of the analytical content lives, and it is exactly the part that gets lost.
